The way of St James

One of the routes which take pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela passes through Fribourg and Romont, revealing aspects of the region's rich religious heritage along the way.
For centuries, tens of thousands of pilgrims from across Europe have made their way to Santiago de Compostela in Northwest Spain in order to visit the tomb of James the Great, one of the twelve apostles. In 1987, the Council of Europe declared the way of St. James which runs from the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela as the first "European Cultural Route". Since then, the ways of Saint James in Switzerland which go from Lake Constance to Lake Geneva are signposted and offer walkers much to discover.

The St. James Way crosses the Pays de Fribourg from east to west, passing through Tafers, Uebewil, Fribourg, Berlens and Romont. Along the way, pilgrims and walkers will discover stained-glass windows, crosses, churches and chapels ... all bearing witness to the long religious tradition in Fribourg...
